About the Author

Lorraine Gamman is from old Hoxton, Shoreditch.
She knew Shirley Pitts when she was growing up.

Gone Shopping - the Story of Shirley Pitts, Queen of Thieves was published in 1996. The transcript that informed the book was originally taken down as a longer oral history and part of a PhD on shoplifting that Gamman finalised in 1999 at Middlesex University (7 years after Shirley died).

Lorraine Gamman is Professor of Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London where in 1999 she set up and continues to direct the Design Against Crime Research Centre.
